Today the PAN card is amongst the most vital documents in India. Way back in 1972, it was introduced to keep tabs on all tax-related information. The IT Dept.of the Government of India issues this valuable document. The PAN card is a 10-digit alpha-numeric code. No two individuals have the same code.

Why do you need a PAN card?

A PAN card serves many purposes.

Originally, it simply used to help store data on tax payments. However, now its purpose has been widened to include many other functions.

It is an identity proof and also a proof of address that is accepted everywhere in India

· Everyone needs to produce a PAN card when they apply for a bank account
· You will require your PAN card when you apply for a credit card
· You will also need your PAN card if you wish to procure a loan from any bank
· When you get a restaurant bill of INR 25,000 or more, you will need to produce your PAN card
· If you are planning on buying or selling immovable property that is worth at least INR 5 lakh or more, you will need to produce PAN card
· You will also need your PAN card when you buy or sell a vehicle
· You will be asked for your PAN card when you deposit any amount greater than INR 50,000 into your bank account

· Partnership firms
· Companies

· Trusts
· Non-resident Indians who pay taxes

What Documents are required for PAN card?

Usually, you will need specific documents when you want to get a PAN card-

· Proof of Identity

You will need to produce a copy of any of the following-
1. Aadhaar card
2. Voter ID card
3. Driving license
4. Passport
5. Ration card bearing the photo of the person applying for a PAN card
6. Any photo identity card, which is issued by the State Government or PSU
7. Pension card that includes the photo of the applicant
8. Applicants may also use a bank certificate on the bank’s letterhead or an original identity certificate that is signed by an MLA or Gazetted Officer or Municipal Councillor

· Proof of Address

As an address proof, you can forward any of these documents-
1. Aadhaar card
2. Voter ID card
3. Driving license
4. Passport
5. Passport of the spouse
6. Post office passbook
7. An assessment order of property tax
8. Electricity bill
9. Water bill
10. Consumer gas bill
11. Broadband bill
12. Your bank account statement
13. Credit card statement
14. Bank depository statement
You have to make sure that if you are submitting a bill as your proof of address, it shouldn’t be more than three months old. Opt for a very recent bill.

· Proof of Date of Birth

The list of documents required for PAN card includes the date of birth proof. To prove when you were born, you should have any of these documents handy-

1. Birth certificate
2. Marriage certificate
3. Pension payment order
4. Matriculation certificate
5. Domicile certificate that is government issued
6. Passport
7. Driving license

Who needs to furnish which Documents

Since it is not just individuals who can apply for this card but companies, firms and trusts as well, there are certain

that one has to submit while the other doesn’t.

· Individuals
Proof of identity, such the Aadhaar, Passport, Voter’s ID card or a driving license
· Hindu Undivided Family
An affidavit of the Hindu undivided family along with the proof of identity
· A Company
Certificate of Registration that has been issued by the Registrar of Firms or Limited Liability Partnerships and Partnership Deed
· A Trust
A copy of the Trust Deed or a copy of the Certificate of Registration Number issued by a Charity Commissioner
· A Society
A copy of the Certificate of Registration Number issued by Registrar of Co-operative Society or Charity Commissioner
· Foreign Nationals
Copies of their passport, Proof of Identity, Overseas Citizen of India proof issued by the Indian Government, a bank statement from their country and an NRE bank statement.

How should you apply for a PAN card?

For a PAN card, you can apply online. The two websites that are recognised by the Government of India are – the NSDL website or the UTIITSL website.

The procedure is quite simple-
· Go to the NSDL website
· Click on ‘Apply Online’
· You will be given an online form
· The only thing you have to do is carefully fill in your details as required by the form
· Next, you take care of the fees for your PAN card.

You can make the payment through debit card, credit card, demand draft or net banking. Once the payment is made, you will be given an acknowledgement number. Then, you will send the

to NSDL through courier or post. When the documents are received, the NSDL will generate your PAN card.
